Sevyn Streeter is no newcomer to the music industry having been in two groups and written hits for stars like Brandi, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown and Estelle. But, the release of her new EP is more like a come forward than a comeback. With the launch of her latest single, “nEXt,” she says wants her fans to feel something.
I interviewed the R&B singer/songwriter following her sold out and smash performance at New York’s legendary, SOB’s club.
NHW: You say you want your fans to feel something from your music. What do you want them to feel?
Sevyn Streeter: “I want them to be true to how they feel on a day-to-day basis. We all go through lot. I want my fans to pop in my album whenever they’re going through whatever that is – good or bad. If you’re happy then, throw on one of my happy tunes. If you’re down, throw on something that to speaks to you that way. I want my music and my album to be a place to go when they need to deal with life.
NHW: You list some vocal powerhouses as your influences, including two of my favorites Whitney Houston and Brandi. Do you think we’ve lost the focus on vocals in current music?
SS: I don’t think that it’s lost because if it had been we wouldn’t have Beyonce, Brandi and Usher. Right now, I feel like there is a shift or change happening and I’m excited about that – I feel like it’s coming back into the 90s all over again. But, there are plenty of people singing. I love Miguel. I love Adele. I think people are starting to sing now more than they have in a minute, but I don’t think it was lost.
NHW: Tell me about the newest single, nEXt.
SS: I haven’t always had the easiest time getting over past relationships. [This single] is from the heart. I just spilled my guts. Like talking to my Mom, “Can you move past this relationship?” I wrote about it because I know I can’t be the only person dealing with this. It’s about me, but it’s about my fans too.
NHW: What can fans expect from this new album that is different?
SS: Every day I learn a little more. Different concepts with word play [when it comes to songwriting]. The performer side of Sevyn is definitely maturing. I am training more and more. The more I work at it the stronger I feel. They can expect a way more energetic and athletic performance. You have to work at it every day and that’s what I’m doing.
The EP comes as her long awaited CBE/Atlantic Records debut, Sevyn recently made her first-ever solo TV appearance, performing her breakthrough hit single, “It Won’t Stop,” on the nationally syndicated Arsenio Hall Show.
Next up is a national headline tour which will run through mid-April. Sevyn will then join superstars such as Prince, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Lionel Richie, and The Roots at the 20th annual Essence Festival, slated to rock New Orleans July 3rd through 6th. For complete details and ticket information, please see SEVYN STREETER TOUR.
