Epic records announced today that Michael Jackson fans can expect a new album, “Xscape” with 8 brand new songs on May 13th. The late King of Pop’s new set is lead produced by Timbaland.
L.A. Reid, the President of Epic Records, said along with Timbaland the other producers have the, “gravitas, depth and range to creatively engage with Jackson’s work.” The set is available for advance purchase on iTunes on Tuesday, April 1st, but will arrive in stores around the world on its official release date in May.
This is the first of this much new material from Jackson who died five years ago while he was preparing for his comeback tour, “This Is It.” It is coordinated by his estate and Epic. It also marks yet another potentially lucrative milestone for the estate, which has successfully managed the superstar’s image to pull it out of debt and make record breaking posthumous profits.
The estate gave Reid unprecedented access to Jackson’s unreleased catalogue of tracks. The statement said that Reid “was granted unlimited access to the treasures representing four decades of material on which Jackson had completed his vocals.” The statement also included a joint quote from the executors of Jackson’s estate, “Michael was always on the cutting edge and was constantly reaching out to new producers, looking for new sounds. He was always relevant and current. These tracks, in many ways, capture that spirit. We thank L.A. Reid for his vision.”
Rodney Jerkins (who co-wrote the title song), Stargate and Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon join Timbaland on production.
